TRACEE ELLIS ROSS –winner Outstanding Female actor in a comedy series for her acting as Dr.Rainbow ‘Bo’ Johnson.(Black-ish).In her role in the ABC sitcom, Ross successfully juggles her career as a doctor , wife and co-parent of five kids, managing to keep it all afloat with T.V husband Anthony Anderson whom she seems to enjoy a good onscreen chemistry.
I will tell her to be patient
The former ‘Girlfriend’ actress was looking tres’ flair-buoyant in an ultra fluffy , feathery black and white ensemble which I liked for it’s one-of -a-kind ingenuity. She acknowledged that fact, as she came up to accept her award:”yeah I wore a little something, I come upon it actually.”she laughed, and thanked the NAACP and ABC remarking ‘ small screens has big power.’
Ross reminisced as a younger actress when she received her very first NAACP nomination for her acting in Girlfriend, but didn’t win; ‘I was devastated for days. Now, if I could tell that young girl today, I will tell her, this will be happening many times over, I would have told her to be patient.”
Then she informed the audience that it was her Superstar mom’s birthday.”My mother just had her 75th birthday ! she paused as she suddenly got all choked in the sensitive moment.”I was there but,I could not get emotional. But I am my mom’s baby, she’s so much the reason I am standing here , not just as Diana Ross’s daughter, but, as my mom.I am so grateful for the pathway she made for me and many of us.”
ANTHONY ANDERSON- winner Outstanding male actor in a comedy series for his role as Dre Johnson.(Black-ish).Not new to the NAACP , the funny comedian returned to Host the 2019 50th NAACP Image award, definitely a crowd pleaser, Anderson had his bag full of jokes and carried the audience along quite well.
FULL house to the Big house
some of his ribs cracking moments is when he made a jab at Lori Laughlin(Rebecca in the 1990’s sit com,Full House)who is potentially facing a hard prison time for allegedly paying out thousands of dollars to secure her daughter into a college of choice.
“Aunty Becky is going from the full house to the big house , that’s a hell different kind of gated community”he joked.
Anderson also went for Kanye Wests jugular when he said this (with the infamous white house visit picture in over view); “he is the first artist whose music is played at a cook out that he is not invited to”! Oouch!! That elicited a lot of LOL’s though, and some sucked- in breaths.
Now to the serious business of winning, Anderson dedicated his win to his Mother-Doris Hancox who was present to accept it as he literally handed over the trophy. Reverting to some straight face serious matter of his mom’s sacrifice, he told the audience that everything he achieved ” is due to her sacrificing her own love for acting, giving up her own desire to become an actress and encouraging me instead to pursue my acting dreams.”Mom was of course beaming with pride.”everything he said is true’ she added.
Black-ish For the win -Outstanding Comedy series award.
No colorism here.
They beat the other nominees in same category ;Atlanta(FX network), Dear white people,(Netflix) Insecure(HBO) Grown-ish (Freeform) The ABC sit com Black-ish cast brought drama on stage as they try to beat the 27 seconds left on the clock , Marsai Martin was chosen to lead the acknowledgements, she thanked the NAACP , and the fans for their recognition and constant support.
When it came to Marcus Scribner’s turn, It was impossible to decipher the 19 year old response to his on screen Dads statement; “okay, let the white People talk”. I wonder, was Scribner being equally sarcastic or was he just speaking straight talk as he replied; “we will not stand for this colorism Anthony”.Lol! Who knows how to decode Teenagers. Scribner was however all smiles and calm as he went on to thank “the NAACP and our amazing cast”.
CHRIS ROCK Comedian and Actor -Presenter of the Outstanding Comedy series award.(Black-ish)
U is for Respect!
Rock was his witty old self as he came up to make his presentation speech,”they told me no Jussie Smollett jokes”, the crowd roared , “yeah, I know, but what a waste of light skin.do you know what I could do with that light skin?that curly hair?my career would be out of here!I would be running Hollywood.”There was more outburst of laughs.”what the hell was he thinking?”Rock continued his Smollett bashing, then as if sending the empire actor a message he said”You know Jessie, from now on you don’t even get a ‘U’.that U was for respect, you ain’t getting no respect from me anymore”.
Yara shahidi the 19 year old who plays Zoey , the first child of the Johnson family and, star of sitcom spin off Grown-ish ( where she went to college and we watch as she navigate and plots her survival strategy ), came to Smollett defense the minute she got a chance as the cast of Blackish were called up to receive Outstanding Comedy series award. “I stand with Jussie And, we don’t integrate we re-create!”, the Grown-ish actress added.

In nearly three decades of honing their crafts ,individually as singles and later as a couple, their earnings have catapulted them to Billionaires status, a very rare and privileged social position. This Bonnie and Clyde, Ride or Die magnificent duo seem to have found the magical Midas wand that turns everything they touch into Gold.
This was why I, amongst millions watching , was moved by his very sensitive, sincere and, humble acceptance speech. And, although he has in the past, received over 21 similar awards, numerous recognition worldwide, JAY Z was arguably, the most humbling, from my point of view. I did not see none of those chest-beating bravado heroic self elevating commentaries and throwing spiteful shades at “haters”, no arrogance, corky demeanor or rants! Only a well dressed gentleman, showing a deep sense of gratitude and appreciation, for the values of his upbringing and, importance of family life.
The 49 year old, began by referring to Abraham Lincolns quote: “its not the amount of years in your life that counts, it’s the life in your years that counts”. He told how he had called his 93 year-old Grandma( who raised him and siblings) the night before the NAACP 50th Awards, and afterwards threw away his previously written speech and decided to speak from the heart.
“I like to dedicate this to my Beautiful Grandmother. Her name is Hattie White and she’s 93 years. She took in my mother Gloria and her other kids. on top of that, her kids had kids of their own, and all of us was raised in one household.” They lived under the same roof in Marcy projects, Brooklyn ,New York. When he asked how much she earned and how she managed to feed all of them on that income, she told him ” $20 a week, but it was fine because you could do a lot with that in those days”
JAY Z pointed out that , This was the propelling factor to his smooth flight, growing up under the wings of such beautiful, strong ,independent women. He developed a can do mentality early on, ” I grew up believing, I can accomplish anything I set my mind and heart to”.
He thanked the President and the NAACP organization, and, dedicated the award to “Hattie White and to those strong women in my house including my beautiful wife Beyoncé.” (The R &B and POP icon acknowledging her man the whole time with pride in her eyes and a supportive smile.) when she gets this award, JAY Z continued, she can place it on her mantle next to her favorite grandson picture . “And when she’s sneaking eating her pork, and her leg swell, she can look at it and remember how well of a ‘G’ she is!.”
Queen of R& B Beyonce’ ENTERTAINMENT OF THE YEAR winner.
BEYONCE’ thanked the honorable nominees in her category after receiving the Trophy from the gorgeous and brilliant Viola Davis (How to get a way with murder/widow star)
“Regina King, I love you so much, you taught us patience, persistence and how to be masterful in our craft. Chadwick Bozeman, in teaching our children to dream and to be seen as kings. LeBron James has taught us strength of all forms, and leading by example, promoting education to our kids. Ryan Coogler, you tell our stories in a way that celebrates our history and proves we do have power. I am happy to be included among all of you and be a part of a vital and thriving community.”
LETITIA WRIGHT – Outstanding Breakthrough Performance award.
The beautiful British-Guyanese actress in her mid 20’s appeared in a lovely black and silver two piece halter top and , a mini bottom, with a loose black cape-like sheath attached. Her hair was plaited in lovely corn-rows. Wright played the feisty ‘Shuri’, sassy and, a high tech genius sister to T’Challa in Black Panther.
In accepting her award, the obviously more shy in real life actress was very humble , spiritual and, filled with a sense of gratitude. In soft tones she tells the audience “Wow, I didn’t expect this at all. I just want to say a massive thank you for all of the support.
